Alpine meadow degradation depresses soil nitrogen fixation by regulating plant functional groups and diazotrophic community composition

چکیده

Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF), a function performed by diazotrophic microbes, plays an essential role in (N) bioavailability terrestrial ecosystems. However, little is known about the effects of meadow degradation on soil BNF and communities alpine meadows. We investigated changes their potential drivers meadows along gradient Tibetan Plateau (non-degraded, lightly degraded, moderately severely degraded meadows) using real-time quantitative PCR amplicon sequencing. Soil rates decreased significantly with range 17.34–79.84 nmol C2H4 g?1 dry d?1 across all sites. The highest rate non-degraded was 1.5–4.6-fold higher than that abundance diversity diazotrophs measured nifH Shannon also meadows, accompanied decreases plant biomass, moisture, nutrient content (C, N). correlated content, (including Nostoc, Scytonema, Rhodopseudomonas, unidentified genera within Rhizobiales Proteobacteria). community composition differed markedly among sites different levels degradation, both autotrophic (Cyanobacteria) heterotrophic (Proteobacteria) contributing to BNF. functional groups, particularly sedge family, were primary via mediating (dissolved organic C N), gene abundance, composition. Our results reveal main during emphasize importance groups shaping regulating rate. This information can be applied restoration

Fire Alters Vegetation and Soil Microbial Community in Alpine Meadow

Grassland fire, as an important ecological factor, is quite influential in determining the structural and functional stability of ecosystem. In this work, the fire-induced changes on the vegetation and soil microbial community were studied in alpine meadow. Microbial community composition was assessed by phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis, and functional diversity was determined by Biolog ...

Soil Fauna Affects Dissolved Carbon and Nitrogen in Foliar Litter in Alpine Forest and Alpine Meadow

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) are generally considered important active biogeochemical pools of total carbon and nitrogen. Many studies have documented the contributions of soil fauna to litter decomposition, but the effects of the soil fauna on labile substances (i.e., DOC and TDN) in litter during early decomposition are not completely clear. Therefore, a f...

Contrasting soil microbial community functional structures in two major landscapes of the Tibetan alpine meadow

The grassland and shrubland are two major landscapes of the Tibetan alpine meadow, a region very sensitive to the impact of global warming and anthropogenic perturbation. Herein, we report a study showing that a majority of differences in soil microbial community functional structures, measured by a functional gene array named GeoChip 4.0, in two adjacent shrubland and grassland areas, were exp...

Legume Growth and Nitrogen Fixation as Affected by Plant Competition for Light and for Soil Nitrogen'

395 ABSTRACT Since the legume responses to environmental factors may be different in grass mixtures than in pure stands, a pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of plant top and root competition on the growth and N fixation of Desmodium intortum, cv. ‘Greenleaf’ grown in association with Setaria anceps, cv. 'Nandi' The plants were grown in deep, narrow pots which provided for ± t...

Urea addition and litter manipulation alter plant community and soil microbial community composition in a Kobresia humilis meadow

Overgrazing and climate change strongly affect alpine meadows by decreasing the plant community biomass and deteriorating the soil environment. To understand how the plant community and soil microbial community structure respond to grazing and N deposition, we conducted an experiment to remove or maintain the plant litter under the chronic addition of N in the Haibei Alpine Meadow in 2005. The ...
